Are Natural Migraine Products Safe?

For years, doctors and neurologists have explored the value of using herbal and dietary supplements to enhance migraine treatment. Given concerns about the side effects and safety of prescription medications and over-the-counter pain relievers, migraine sufferers have also sought natural alternatives. But are these natural products really safe? 

The answer from a leading headache authority is, "yes."

The annual migraine conference this past June featured a symposium that included Dr. Hans-Christoph Diener, Chairman of the Department of Neurology and Headache Center at Germany's Essen University Hospital.
 
Dr. Diener conducted a comprehensive review of research on five of the leading natural products used to help prevent migraines:
  • Riboflavin
  • Magnesium
  • CoQ10
  • Butterbur (Petsites Hybridus, CO2 extract from Germany)
  • Feverfew
For each, he looked at the quality of the studies that were performed, what side effects surfaced and whether the side effects were serious-or bothersome-enough to interfere with having people take the product. 

The side effects: With some products, Dr. Diener noted side effects such as burping or  mild diarrhea. With others, there seemed to be the rare potential for more serious, though reversible, side effects.


The bottom line: Dr. Diener's review of the evidence showed no serious side effects or safety issues in using any of these natural products to help with migraine prevention.

Headache Relief: Change Your Hair Style

During a migraine, many people report such extreme sensitivity to pain that even their hair or earrings seem to throb. But did you know that hair style, jewelry and clothing might even cause a headache? Here's how:

  • Ponytails: Tight ponytails or updos can pull on connective tissues, irritating your muscular system which can trigger or worsen headache pain.
  • Earrings: Heavy earrings may also pull on connective tissue. During a migraine, the body's hypersensitivity to stimuli can trigger a full-blown pain response.
  • Hats and Headbands:  Tight-fitting and heavy headwear are similarly of concern.
?If you suffer from migraines, loosen up and lighten up to keep what's on your head from contributing to what's causing pain inside your head.
 
Do Magnets Help Migraines?

We previously reported that the FDA had approved a Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) headband to help people experiencing migraine aura or an actual attack. TMS uses mild electrical currents to interrupt brain hyperactivity associated with migraines.
 
Now, the manufacturer of the SpringTMS headband has announced a pilot study expected to run through early 2015.  Once the study is complete, the device may be available by prescription to rent for about $250/month.
 
Note that while TMS was vetted by clinical research at 18 U.S. headache clinics, there is no similar research showing that products such as magnetic pillows or earrings have any effect on migraines. Plus, TMS is different than simply wearing magnets - a therapy about which, according to WebMD, not enough is known to understand the possible risks.
